At the Karu wreck inquiry Walter Parker, master of the Ohinemuri, ,who towed the Kami over the' Whangape bar, said he did not consider that the captain of the Karu took any risk in crossing. In witness’ opinion tße captain was justified in proceeding to sea. As far ,he knew there were no rocks on the bar.

Dennis Brown Cochrane, seamaft on the Earn, asked what he did in the vessel's engine room at Auckland, said he just chipped the boiler and cleaned the engine. Counsel: “Did you put in any new plates?"

Witness: “No." Counsel: “Now, we want the truth. What did you do?" Witness “I put in a couple of bolts in the hull because there was a bit of of leak, I put a bit of plate in, with a bolt on each side," —Press Assn.
