WHANGAREI HIGH SCHOOL

BOARD OF GOVERNORS,

The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Whangarei High School was held last night, Mr. W. A. Carruth presiding. There were also ■present; —Messrs. H. C. Rishworth, J. D. McKenzie. J. I. Wilson, F. HigginsOn, A. B. Charters, principal, and J. McKinnon, secretary. EXCESS IN EXPENDITURE.

The Audit Office wrote asking' tliat the sum of £34 2s 4d. excess of unauthorised expenditure, be refunded to the Board. The chairman wrote in January last stating that the expenditure was well within the legal limits. The travelling expenditure of £29 18s 2d for chairman and members to the Secondary Schools’ Conference, had been met out of the grant for incidental expenses and not from general funds. Besides attending the conference the delegates waited on Ministers of the Crown with regard to obtaining grants for the new High School buildings, and transacted other business tfor the advantage of the school. The Audit Office, however, wrote again stating that there was no statutory authority whereby a board might incur expenses of attending conferences. Such expenses could only bo paid out of “unauthorised expenditure.” The Office therefore asked for a refund of the excess, of which each member’s share was £3 15s 10d.

It was resolved to. intimate to the Office that the Board would further consider the matter. ELECTRIC BELL INSTALLED. The chairman reported that the Board’s executive had authorised the installation of an electric bell and lighting the masters’ office in the new High School building at a cost of £9 ss. The chairman’s action was approved, APPLICATION FOR SHED. The chairman also reported that application had been made to the Education Department for a shelter shed at the Lower School at a cost of £29. No reply had yet been received.
