MEATWORKS SALE
GOVERNMENT’S VETO. unsuccessful "appeals to MINISTER, A large number of letters have appeared in the Wellington newspapers discussing the 'Government’s refusal to grant a meat export -killing license to enable the Wellington Meat Export Company’s works to be sold to Borthwieks. Some of the shareholders ask why they should not be allowed to get out of the position with the loss of all but eight shillings in the £ of the capital they subscribed, instead of being forced to continue this season with the prospect of losing everything. It is understood that strong efforts have been made to get the Minister of Agriculture to recede from his original decision, the suggestion being made that Thomas Borthwick and Sons would be willing to complete the purchase if a license were issued with reasonable/conditions to protect the interest which the Government has a mind in its complete refusal No concession has been secured, and it is expected that nothing can be done except to petition Parliament when the session opens, asking for inquiry and redress.
