HAULAGE OF CREAM

UP-TO-DATE METHODS DESIRABLE Interesting points in the efficient hauling of ream for dairy factories were traversed by Mr. D. Hull. of Cheltenham, in a paper read to the dairy factory managers assembled at Wanganui on Thursday. Mr. Hull referred to the desirability of possessing good trucks, well equipped with sun covers, and painted white so that the rays of the sun should bo reflected, arrangements should be made with suppliers to have their cream stands erected at suitable heights, roofed over, painted white, and so constructed that a free circulation of air should be ensured. In his interesting address Mr. Hull dealt with haulage problems in detail, and stated that at the Cheltenham factory ten motor trucks handled the supply at the small cost of 4Jd per ton 'per mile. (Applause). A very comprehensive costing scheme was used, and in this way it was found what results wore, achieved. A mechanic was kept going, and drivers were required to hand in written reports daily, of what repairs their trucks needed. I Thus minor troubles were prevented from developing into more costly weaknesses. On the rounds, which were carefully plotted out, the trucks went up "hills empty, where possible, and down hills when loaded. Such things as hills and j wind had to' be taken into] I consideration as a concession to the size i of the fuel bill. Route maps would be j found advantageous, in that when one driver fell' sick, another could then carry on. ! Mr. Hull .produced a very illuminat- i ing chart showing the cost of operating I a 4-ton truck during twelve months. He stated that careful attention to I cream haulage would bo found very profitable, and he recommended managers to give the matter careful attention. (Applause).
