\ SOUTH AFRICA'S PROBLEM J ECONOMIC COMMISSION'S j REPORT. INTERESTING RECOMMENDATIONS. (Received 10.57 a.m.) CAPETOWN, February 19. The Economic Commission reported that the only point of agreement in the majority and minority reports is the necessity for arresting migration to towns. The majority report recommends the Government to undertake a complete survey of the economic position of the native people. It expresses the opinion that the first apprehension in regard to .tho future of the white worker in'competition with the native will be falsijfiedif South Africa continues to deI velop national resources on economic principles. Secondly, the European has less to fear from the improvement than from the deterioration of tho economic status of the .native. Thirdly, contact between native and European has lasted too long, and their economic | co-operation is too intimate and well j established, for the exclusion of the native from European areas, and the European Industries Commissioners declare that the substitution of whites for natives in the gold mines is not an economic proposition. It would be a sounder policy for the' Government to employ a proportion of its share of profits from the gold industry in developing other forms of production in the country rather than inducing a large number of whites to make their liveli- ! hood dependent on the industry. They j are of opinion that exclusion of east j coast natives is unnecessary.—A. and N.Z. . !
