GOVERNMENT AUDITOR
OFFICIAL FOR WHANGAREI. REPRESENTATIONS TO MINISTER. As a representative of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce, Mr A. R. Crane interviewed the Hon. A. D. McLeod last evening and asked him to further the chamber's representations that a Government auditor should be stationed in Whangarei. In support of the request, he stated that there were fully 300 local bodies in North Auckland, the books of which had to be audited annually. He submitted that if an auditor resided in Whangarei the large amount of work entailed would go ahead much more expeditiously, while the auditor would also be available to give advice, and would thus contribute towards reducing l the number of tags to balance sheets. The Auditor-General had said that there was not sufficient -work to warrant the appointment, but locally it was thought that there was. When he was local Deputy Official Assignee for 18 months, the speaker had had the experience of not having had his books audited at all, while his successor's books had not been audited for three years. This was being done now, but the delay meant that the Deputy Official Assignee was meanwhile £SOO out of pocket in connection with trust accounts. The Minister stated that he noted the points made, and would .place the request before the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nosworthy, for his consideration.
