ON THE WARPATH
DE. CHESSON HITS OUT. It is sonic considerable time since the Whaugarci Borough Council has undergone trenchant criticism by Dr. 11. Chosson, medical officer of health, regarding its action (or inaction) in regard to the demands he makes periodically in the interests of the ' welfare and health of the people. At last night’s meeting of the Whangarei . Borough Council, however, the following letter figured in the inward correspondence:— "On May 4, 1022, close on four years ago, I wrote to the council pointing out the insanitary method at that time adopted in the collect ion of night-soil, and requested substitution of an approved system, using sealed pans, the entire removal of the pai£ with its contents at each collection, and leaving a properly cleansed pan each time. The council' instructed its engineer to proceed with the drawing up of plans, and in connection with this I had several consultations with j him. I .understand further that the
council instructed him to call for tenders or obtain material. I regret to find that the old system is still in operation, and there seems to have been no progress made towards the establishment of the sealed-pan system. I cannot understand how it is that this important matter, having been brought to the notice of the council, has been allowed to dfop. Mor can I understand how it is that the citizens of that portion of the borough which is uusewered can tolerate the present state of things, which is an absolute disgrace to any town in a civilised country. I must request the council to take immediate steps to have the double-pan system installed j and a proper depot established where ! the pans can be cleansed and disin- j feeted.” | Cr. A. M. Eust brought under notice j of the council that at Hikurangi the j double-pan system had proved quite satisfactory, and, in a measure, had enabled night to h,e turned into day with no disagreeable adjuncts. The Mayor, however, regarded the demand from the financial aspect, and consequently he proposed that it be referred to the Legal and Finance Committee for consideration and report. As an amendment, Cr. E. G. W.‘ Tibbits moved that Dr. Chesson be informed that the council proposed! holding a special meeting to consider j extension of drainage, which would! overcome the Cause of complaint. It was an old question revived and it could be held over meanwhile. After a little comment upon the wording of the demand, the amend ment was adopted.
