LORD MAYOR’S CAR

“ WORTHY OF SYDNEY.” SYDNEY, January 20. An item on the Finance Committee’s report at the City Council meeting last night authorising the purchase of a .motor car for the use of the Lord Mayor, provoked hostile discussion from the Civic Reformers. The Lord Mayor explained that the car was bought for the use of the Lady Mayoress and himself. It was one of the best cars available, and was comparable with any Rolls-Royce at the value of £ISOO. . Personally, he rarely used the car, but there was no car in the possession of the Council worthy of the occasions on which it was called into use. Alderman Stephens, speaking against the purchase of the ear without the approval of the Council, said he would vote against the item as a protest. But the item was adopted, with eight Civic Reformers in the minority.
