NEW T.B. SERUM.
STARTLING DISCOVERY. BY SYDNEY DOCTOR, (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, December 31. Momentous strides are being made in the Commonweatlh in the treatment of cancer, tuberculosis, and infantile paralysis. Important discoveries and research work have been made public during the last few weeks whiclr*may result in the successful combating of these scourges. At Sydney University thousands of pounds have been spent in research on the effect of radiation on cancer. It is announced that the Gaiffe-Gallot and Pilon apparatus will shortly be installed at the University, which will be the most powerful of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The apparatus, it is claimed, will enable more complete experiments in radiation to be carried out by the Cancer Research Committe. Certain types of cancer, the committee states, can be destroyed by rays. Others resist the rays, and it is for this purpose that the installation will be made. Investigation will show that different effects are produced on living tisseus by radiations of different wave lengths. The operator of the GaiffeGallot apparatus will learn to select particular wave lengths for particular results.
It is anticipated that many more cases, previously classed as “hopeless,” will be assisted and brought within hope of recovery. Infantile paralysis has lieen on the increase in New South Wales, and to such an extent that supplies of scrum to combat the disease had to be requisitioned from Victoria. An appeal was made to mothers of patients in New South .Wales to allow extractions of blood to he taken from their children. In this manner the demand for serum wiis soon met, and now the epidemic has been stemmed. A discovery of great importance in the cure of tuberculosis lias been made by Dr. E. Ilcnty Sinai I page, of Sydney, who has evolved what lie claims to be a now serum of tuberculosis. Professor MaeCaluin, Professor of Pathology at Melbourne University, has declared that if experiments which have been made can he verified, Spablinger and Dreyor and other specialists will fade into significance before the new discovery. It is rumoured that General Sir Neville Howso, V.C., Federal -Minister for Health, has made an offer to Dr. Smallpage for the purchase of the patents and manufacturing rights. The new serum can be prepared cheaply. For £75, 10,000 patients can bo treated. The serum is derived from human spleen and is injected hyperdermically. Dr. Smallpage is a man of 30, who served in the wax with the R.A.M.C. He is a specialist in tropical diseases, and it was while experimenting in the treatment of malaria that Dr. Smallpage made Jus discovery. With his serum he had injected 72 T.B. cases, and success lias attended every patient, who have shown wonderful improvement.
