NEW POLICE COMMISSIONER
SUPT. W. B. McILVENEY.
MINISTER'S EULOGY.
WELLINGTON, This Day. I Commissioner A. H. Wright retires ! from the Police Force at the end of 1 January, and today the Government j appointed Superintendent W. B. Mcll- 1 veney, of the Wellington district, to be Commissioner in his stead.
The Minister of Justce, Sir James Parr, in making the announcement, said that Superintendent Mellveney was a senior officer of great ability and long experience, who, he had no doubt, would fill the higher position with every credit to himself and satisfaction to the department. Personally, he regretted the retirement of Commissioner Wright, who was a sound, solid officer vrith whom he was pleased to have been associated for the past two or three years. Mr. Wright's principal characteristic was his invariably sound judgment and his fair dealing with all ranks. Th e Government had reposed considerable confidence in him and had always found that confidence to have been justified.—Press Assn.
William Bernard Mellveney joined the service of the police force in 1893. He was appointed a detective in 1899 and was promoted to the rank of inspector in 1919 and on January 1, 1924, he assumed the office of Superintendent of the Wellington District.
