MEETING OF BOARD

! The Board of Governors of the Whangarei High School met last evening, the chairman, Mr W. A. Carruth, presiding. There were also present Messrs D. A. McLean, H. C. Kishworth, R. C. M. Harington, P. Higginson, H. W. Crawford, J. McKinnon (secretary) and A. B. Charters (principal). PREMIER'S RE-ELECTION. A telegram was received from the Hon. J. G. Coates thanking the chair- , mail for his telegram of congratula--1 tions tended to the Prime Minister on his return to Parliament. Mr Coates gave his assurance that it would be his earnest endeavour to promote in every possible way the prosperity and progress of the Dominion and all its citizens. A telegram of thanks and appreciation was also received from the Hon. Sir C. J. Parr. STAFF APPOINTMENTS. With regard to the staffing of the Junior High School, including the appointment of a specialist in French, a telegram from the Education Department stated that an advertisement had been inserted in the Gazette calling for applications. The selection of suitable applicants was left in the hands of the Board of Governors and had to be submitted to the Education Department for final approval. CLASS ACCOUNTS. The Director of Education wrote stating that separate accounts would have to be kept for manual and science classes as from January next. The letter was received. LABORATORY FITTINGS. In connection with matters relating to the hostel and the providing of fittings for the laboratory a telegram received from the Minister of Education, Sir C. J. Parr, stated that these would receive his attention. FIREWOOD SUPPLY. The principal reported that the firewood on the Board's property intended to be used for the hostel h.ad been cut and stacked at a cost of 16/ a ton. The chairman also stated that the macrocarpas which the . Railway Department was cutting down would make splendid firewood. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman to arrange for school supplies. NOXIOUS WEEDS. Attention was drawn by Mr T. M. Conaghan to the gorse and blackberry spreading from the High School site on to his property at Kent Road. It was decided to reply that the matter -would be attended to at an early date. REMODELLING OF OLD SCHOOL. In regard to the alterations to the old building the Director of Education intimated that the grant for the work of remodelling had been approved, in accordance with Messrs Windust and ! Colebrook's tender. A grant had also been approved for the erection of three portable rooms and the Auckland Education Board was being asked to carry out the work as expeditiously as possible. Each room would be four sections wide and four deep and would comfortably seat 40 pupils or more in dual desks, of which the Auckland Board had been asked to supply 60 of size No. 4. The Board had been asked to so place the building that further rooms could bo added if necessary as the attendance grew or as activities were undertaken. In addition to the desks other furniture would be required and the Department would be g|ad if the Whangarei Board would forward a requisition with costs for the Department's consideration. It was decided to instruct Messrs Windust and Colebrook to proceed with the remodelling work. The principal was also asked to make out the requisition required by the Department. THE HOSTEL, Reference to the disorganised state of affairs in connection with the hostel was "referred to by Mr Rishworth. He recommended that the proposed work on the building be set afoot. Mr Crawford moved that a deputation wait on t'lie Prime Minister on Thursday with, a view to hurrying on the work of preparing plans and estimates. The interviewing of Mr Coates in the matter was deputed to the chairman and Mr Crawford, the latter of whom was also instructed to make arrangements for the meeting. 1 PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONS Mr Charters reported that the proficiency examinations had been held throughout the backblocks. The results of these would be available in about ten days' time.
