DEFIANT PRISONER
LOWERED FROM ROOF. FOODLESS FOR 38 HOURS. (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 8. Warders at midnight thought to surprise the Parkhurst prisoner who clambered to the roof and defied the authorities, but he was wide awake, sheltering behind a chimney. He sent out a fusillade of 3lates, but the warders were unhurt and overpowered the convict, whom they roped up and lowered to the ground. He had been without food for 38 hours.—A. and N.Z.
