At the Napier Supreme Court a witness in a case that involved one of the Public Works Department's camps at Tutira, was asked (reports the "Telegraph") if he ever played cards at the camp. "You bet," was the laconic response. "How did you get on at it, lose or win?" was the next query, "Usually lost,-" .said witness in a regretful tone. "One of the lambs, I suppose," commented counsel. '' Oh, well,'' replied witness brightening, "if I was one of the lambs T wasn't the only one." Some smokers once they sample a brand that pleases them ntver change it. See-m to think it' car't be bettered. There are others who recognise that the world is continually advancing and that pew. brands of tobacco are introduced from time to time which are a distinct improvement on the old ones. Take our New Zealandgrown tobacco, for example. These brands, now attracting the attention of smokers everywhere, possess some characteristics which distinguish them from the imported goods in a very .marked degree. Firstly, the leaf is toasted, and this brings out the flavour arid fragrance very perceptibly—just as the flavour and aroma of coffec is improve.d by roasting the berries. Secondly, unlike the" imported brands, they contain so little nicotine that they do not injuriously affect the heart, nerves, or eyesight. Thcv give a sweet, cool, and satisfying smoke, too. Popular brands are: River}'en 1 Gold, mild; Navy Cut (Bulldog), mcd ium; and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bui 1 's head), full. Already the grow'ng and manufacture of these tobaccos, const' tutes a flourishing industry and oiu , destined to 'prove of national i ance. v 4
