A THIEVING EXPEDITION

YOUNG MAORI FINED.

; A young Maori named William Kake, aged 19 years, set out on a thieving expedition yesterday morning and stole articles in three places before his

career was cheeked by Constable Power. This morning, at the Whangarei Magistrate's Court, before Mr R. W. Tate, S.M., he pleaded guilty to all the charges.

Senior-Sergeant o'Grady said that accused went to Joseph Smith's secondhand shop yesterday morning and while the proprietor was busy took a watch valued ft 12s Gd and ran away. Later he went to R. G. Hoslcing's shop <and stole a pair of socks valued at 5s 6d. The next place visited was the grocery store of C. 0. Roscoe. There he took

5s worth of sixpences from the till and a cake cf chocolate. All the articles had been recovered when accused was arrested.

Mr G-. H. Woods said that accused was an orphan living with uncles near the Whangarei Falls, and had not appeared previously in Court. He worked at odd jobs, and as far as was known he did not drink.

The Magistrate warned Kake that on each of the offences he was liable to go to gaol, ibut his Worship did not wish to send the young man there. Accused had at least told the truth and that, and the fact that he was. a youth, were factors in his favour. However, if accused got into further trouble he would t>p imprisoned. , A fine of £2 10s on each charge was imposed, the Magistrate stressing the point that Kake should be made to work to pay tjx'e fines.
