ALIEN INFLUX
UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEMS. LOWERING LIVING STANDARDS BRISBANE, This Day. Giving evidence at Mackay before the Royal Commissioner (Mr. Ferry) on the question of the influx of aliens into North Queensland, S. Fallon, A.W.U. organiser, declared that there was not sufficient work in Queensland to employ the men already unemployed, and there was no hope of successfully settling them on the land, as the local market for primary producers was so limited. Consequently, thp influx of large numbers of Workers from other countries would result in aggravating the unemployment problem. Witness said he was convinced that unless the flow of Southern Europeans into this country was checked, it must have the result of reducing the standard of living, as they put up with conditions a British subject would not tolerate. They also connived with employers to evade awards, the Workers' Accommodation Act, and the Unemployed Insurance j Act. .• |
