OBITUARY.

MR JOHN" MULVANEY. At 1 lie liome of liis niece, Airs IX. ('adman, in Stanley Street, yesterday afternoon, there passed away Mr John Mithaney, who was 82 years of ago on March Ifi. Deceased, who was a bachelor, had been resident in the district for the past fiO years and until three days before his demise had been hale and liearty. The late Mr Mulvaney was born at Delry, Ayrshire, and, as a young mail of 22 years of age he arrived in Now Zealand in tlie ship Resolute, on Juno 22, after a voyage of 90 days. The Whangarei district attracted lu:n shortly after he landed, and. his subr sequent experiences were those common to the old pioneering times. They included farming in various districts,, gum-digging, timber working and telei graph lino laving. At one time he was third partner with the late Dr. Perssoin in the ownership of farm land at Kauika, or what is now the Woodhill road part of the borough, and also in." the properties through which Porowini Avenue now runs and the site of the old racecourse in Yinetown. He also owned part of the site of the coalmines at Ivamo, and until recently he had resided at his home on Ivamo Road at the foot of Meldrum's Hill. The late Mr Malvaney had had his full share of the hardships of pioneering* and on one occasion, accompanied by the late Mr Albert Reed, he walked to Auckland from Whangarei to give evidence in a Court case. While fornman for the late Mr H. Cheeseman, deceased had many trying experiences when the difficulties of driving over the roads were very much greater than they are nowadays. Deceased, who is survived by three sisters, Mrs H. Cadman, of Whangarei; Mrs Mulgrove, of Ivamo; and Mrs' Bartley, of Mangonui, will be interred at Ketenikau cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
