BANKRUPTCY RETURNS.

INCREASE IN FEBRUARY.

There were 57 bankruptcies registered in the Dominion in February, as compared with 47 in January and 37 in December. Compared with February of previous years , the position is as follows: February, .1925, 57; February, 1924, 48; February, 1923, ">(>; February, 1922, 43.

j The figures for last month were larger than in iany corresponding ! month in the past three years. For the first two months of the year the bankruptcies totalled 104, as compared with 85 in the corresponding two months of last year and 105 in the two months of 1923. In January farmers headed the list of bankrupts, but last month labourers claimed this position, for there were eight insolvencies of labourers and only seven of farmers. Maoris and the motor trade contributed five each to the total and builders four. Three carriers, two miners, two butchers, two millhands, two agents, a commercial traveller, a jeweller, a saddler, a mercer, a dairyman and a. contractor were among the other bankrupts.
