TAURROA NEWS.
FAREWELL SOCIAL, A social was tendered last week at Tauraroa to Mr. and Mrs. C. Rivett and their son. Both Mr. and Mrs. Rivett have endeared themselves to one and all during their sojourn at Tauraroa. Owing to the non-existence of a hall the function was held, at the residence of Mrs. Rivett. The evening was spent in dancing, games and singing, musical items being contributed by Messrs. F. Quin, P. Rivett and P. Sterling and Miss K. Quin as a quartette, and songs by Messrs. Yarr, Holmes and Truman, while Mr. Parr provided some amusement with a mock court.
After a very sumptuous supper, provided by the ladies of the district, Mr. W. "Weir, on behalf of the residents, expressed regret at the guests leaving the district, saying that during their sojourn both Mr. and Mrs. Rivett had always lent a very willing hand in all social affairs and anything for the advancement of the district. Chief of all was the very capable and unselfish manner in which they had kept the Tauraroa Post Office for so long. Mr. Weir then presented to Mr. and Mrs. Rivett a handsome travelling rug, and beautifully-fitted suit case, and a set of hair brushes in leather case to Master Rivett. Messrs. W. Tubbs and J. Cross, on behalf of the Public Works Department's employees, endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker. Mr. Rivett on rising to reply was greeted with loud applause. He thanked the residents for the presents and the kind remarks, and spoke of some of' the hardships of keeping a post office on the construction works. However, both Mrs. Rivett and himself had done all they could to help on the district, and it was pleasing to know that their efforts had been appreciated. The singing of '' They are jolly good fellows" and "Auld Lang Syne" brought to a close a very enjoyable evening. GENERAL. Owing to Mr. and Mrs. Rivett leaving the district great difficulty has been experienced in getting some one to take over the post office. However, Mrs. R. W. Gunson has come to the rescue, and has undertaken to fill the gap in the meantime. There is a good deal of sickness in the district. Feed in thfe district is fairly dry. and not plentiful. Some of the settlers are breaking in new ground for winter feed. Mr, F. McCullough has made some alterations to his residence.
