Y.M.C.A.
WHANGAREI ACTIVITIES. NEW SECRETARY APPOINTED. The Whangarei Y.M.C.A. is about to enter on its second year of activities in the fine new buildings erected a year ago. The Board of Directors has every reason to feel gratified at the way in which the building has fulfilled the purpose for which it was erected. The winter activities of the Association provided wholesome recreation for a large number of young men and boys, and there is" every hope of this work being further extended in the coming Winter. In December the Association suffered a severe blow by the resignation of Mr R. H. Nicholls, general secretary, whose natural gifts, combined with untiring energy, made him an ideal man for the position. t Fortunately Mr Nicholls is still residing in Whangarei, and is now a member of the Board of Directors, so that his experience and advice are still available.
During the midsummer months the activities of the Association have been considerably less than during the.cooler months, so that \fit'H a view to securing the best man possible for the position of general 'secretary, the board was not in a hurry to make the appointment. The members believe that they have now secured the right man in the person of Mr Bert Whiting, who has had considerable experience in Y.M. C.A. work both in England and in Canada. Mr Whiting comes with the highest credentials, and the fact that he relinquished a good business position for the present appointment proves that his heart is in Y.M.C.A. work. The Board now feels, the president states, that t'he progress of. the Association in the future will be as marked as in the past, and looks with confidence for the help of the citizens of Wliangarei in carrying on the work, for after all it is Whangarei's Association, not the Board's.
