SUBMARINE SURVEY.

NEW ZEALAND AND SAMOA. ■. j At the animal meeting of the New Zealand Institute in Wellington this week, the Hon. G. 11. Thomson, M.L.C., brought up a question oi promoting a detailed survey of the coastal region within the 100-fatham lino by H.ILS. Veronica and Laburnum, and s.->. Tutanekai, as well as between New Zealand and tlie Tongan and Samoan groups. He pointed out the importance of the suggestion in view of the development of a. fishing department which the Government was undertaking. If the larger vessels of the naval service, such as H.M.S. Dunedin, were fitted with some depth-finders, it would be possible to obtain a complete bathymetrical survey of the deep fissure which lies approximately along the line between the volcanic region of the North Island and the Tongan ,and Samoan groups. Valuable information could be obtained in connection with the work of the volcanic, observatory. The United States navy would probably supplement this - work by a similar survey between Samoa and Hawaii. It would be furthering a great Imperial and international

scientific research, if t'he Government} took action in the directions suggested* He moved, "That the Government urged to furnish the vessels of thej Xev/ Zealand naval scrvice with Soltt£| depth-finders to enable them to caxjJJ out a bathymctrlcal survey of the seats round New Zealand and of the deep* sea area between New Zealand an 3 .Samoa." ■ The motion ijyas seconded by Dr. C* Chilton and carried.
