H AYWOOD 42, ALBEET STEEET, AUCKLAND. P.O. Box 1435. Telegrams: "Hayutil, Auckland." Witness was accompanied by A. Pirihi. Croft and Corran told him about tne row, stating that McGregor and Me- j Neil had made a grab at one another. To Mr Steadman: He met Croft in Whangarei last Saturday, when he told Croft that it was pretty hard to go against a woman and had also told | Croft that he would get more help from Mrs McGregor than McNeil. Ho did not follow Mrs McGregor to the station. A. Pirihi, trucker, Tauraroa, said he saw Mrs McGregor come in from the station about S p.m. Her face was marked by a scratch on the nose. There was also a scratch on her neck. He went straight to his hut and did not go to the station without Parafca Pirihi. Eichard Hassall, labourer, said that iie went to Tauraroa on January in reply to an advertisement by McNeil. | There were five others with him. Me- | Neil advised them against McGregor's boardinghouse and urged them to stay a f Sewell's. He had been to McGregor's before he saw McNeil. j Counsel briefly addressed the Bench on the lines of the evidence given. His Worship said there was no doubt an altercation had happened. The story of the £50 smacked of untruth. McNeil would be a fool to offer such an amount. Croft and Corran had never been got at. The evidence of Mrs McGregor alone made it necessary that something should be done, because she did not remember what had happened. That there was both scratching and striking was true. The only remedy was to give the surety of the peace asked for. As to the language, it was used in the waiting-room of a railway station, which was a public place, and was of such a nature that if Mrs McGregor saw it in print it would probably shock her. Defendant would be convicted on both charges and bound over to keep the peace in two sureties of £25 each for a period of 12 months, also to pay costs amounting to £11 18s fid.
