DRUNKEN DRIVER.

FINE OF £5 INFLICTED. At the Whangarei Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr R. W. Tate, S.M., William Wood was charged with being found drunk in Cameron Street whilst in charge of a horse and gig. Wood pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant O 'Grady said that the accused had been out in the country canvassing yesterday and on his journey homeward was found endeavouring to drive the horse. WooU was in a drunken condition. Wood in explanation said he was "inebriated, but not drunk." He had only had three drinks. The Magistrate;. "Three drinks too many." It was pointed out that W T ood had never appeared in Court before. The Magistrate: "I can't treat the offenee as a light matter. A drunken man in charge of a horse and vehicle is a dangerous menace. The maximum fine under the Act is £10, but I will lei, him down with half that amount."
