MANDATE FLOUTED

BY ANGORA GOVERNMENT. IRAQ INVASIONS. TROOPS REINFORCED. LONDON, Ck:'/)ber 8. The "Daily Telegraph's" diplomatic correspondent says the military situation in Northern Iraq has taken a new and grave turn. Angora has not only not replied to the British Note, but has deliberately authorised the aggravation of the trouble. The Turkish troops which originally invaded Iraq not only remained there, but have been substantially reinforced. Absence of collision between the invaders and Anglo-Iraqi forces is only due to the British commander's restraint and his withdrawal order to avoid a clash. The Turkish, outrage concerns the League of Nations as much as Britain, as Iraq is under the League mandate. It remains to be seen what the League Council will do to vindicate its authority and whether other League Powers will support the Anglo-Iraqi forces. —A. and N.Z.
