(Received 9 a.m.)
LONDON, August 25,
The Ministry of Labour has appointed an influential committee of engineers and surveyors to report on the Geddes Severn project, previously held up on account of the enormous cost it involves. The construction of a concrete, dam two miles long adjacent to the junction of the Wye with the Severn is estimated to develop 500,000 horse-power. —A. and N.Z.
At a meeting of the parliamentary Labour Party on May 7 last Mr Thomas Shaw, Minister of Labour, stated that ii the committee then investigating the proposed £25,000,000 barrage across the River Severn, for the purpose of generating electric power, reported favourably the Government would facilitate the carrying out of the scheme. When the committee's report was presented later the Government deemed the estimated cost prohibitive.
