FABEWKLLED AT WAIHI,

Senior-Sergeant O 'Grady, who is about to come to Whangarei, was farewelled on Saturday night at Waihi, where he has been for seven years. A large and representative gathering of citizens assembled in the King's Theatre, the Mayor of Waihi, Mr. W. M. Wallnutt, presiding. On behalf of the citizens the Mayor presented a rug to Senior-Sergeant O'Grady and a "handsome beaded bag to Mrs O 'Grady. His Worship said it was quite fitting that the seniorsergeant should be accorded a farewell at the hands of the citizens. He (the Mayor) had been associated as district Coroner and a Justice of the

Peace with the senior-sergeant during the past seven years, and he could say that lie had always found him to be a thoroughly conscientious and able officer in the discharge of 'his duties. Continuing, the Mayor said he thought the position of a seniorsergeant in a "dry" district was even more difficult that in ordinary circumstances. The function of the judiciary was to carry out the law as it found it, and hence its officers were ofttimes blamed for the sins of omission and commission on the part of fhe Legislature. The Mayor concluded by wishing the senior-sergeant all prosperity and success in his new sphere of duty.

During the course of "his reply Mr O 'Grady said that previous to coming to Wailii he had heard hard tales of the place, but had been pleasantly surprised, and found the people a lawabiding community.

Dancing- was interspersed with musical items, and a most successful function was brought to a close by all singing "Auld Lang Syne."
