HIKURANGI v. WAIiO,

This match was played at Hikurangi on Saturday in splendid weather, before a big crowd of spectators. This was the concluding game of the North Auckland Cup competition for the season and keen rivalry prevailed, as Waro were thought to have a rosy chance, especially as Pickett, the Hikurangi captain, could not turn out on account of injuries received the week previous. The teams were as follows: — Hikurangi.—Steele, Ninimo, Darlington, Malcolm, Ratcliffe, McLennan, Barrie, Rarity, Tunstall, Nicholson. Queripel. Waro. —Russell, Malcolm, Pratt, Connor, Piatt, Piatt, Sankey, Sheppard, Scarr, Ackers, Lawson. Right from the start Hikurangi at tacked Waro goal, and from a nice pass by Queripel Rarity scored a splendid goal in two minutes. After a fc-v more exchanges Barrie secured on the right wing and a line centre of his skidded off the Waro full-back into the net, after five minutes' play. Give :md take play was the order for quit? a while, and then another hot attack by Hikurangi ended in Queripel running the ball over the line. After some hot niidfield play Waro laid siege to the Hikurangi goal, but the effort ended fruitlessly. Hikurangi pressed again, and quite a dingdong effort ended in Rarity missing a good chance. Hikurangi, playing all out. made an onslaught on Waro goal, which, proved abortive. End to end play of a very fast nature took place, and then Tunstall had the ball in good position, but failed to steady himself and missed. Not to be denied, however, from about niidfield the same player beat

two opponents and scored a beauty. Shortly after this the whistle sounded half-time.-—Hikurangi Waro nil.

On resuming Hikurangi attacked right away, and then Waro took i 'hand in a siege which came to nothing. Hikurangi pressed hard again, having three hot shots at Waro goal and forcing a corner, which proved abortive. The next thing of note was a hot attack by Waro, the ball going past. Waro at this stage of the game was making a most determined and sustained onslaught on the Hikurangi goal, which was repulsed. End to end play was the order for five minutes, probably the fastest Soccer ever seen North of Auckland. The next descent on Waro goal ended in Nicholson scoring a beauty. Waro launched another hot attack, which Nimnio repelled in grand style. Waro, not to be denied, came again with a most determined effort, and a shot from S'heppard was deflected off Nicholson through his own goal. Next Hikurangi attacked and was repulsed. At this stage most of Hikurangi players were showing signs of fatigue, and it was now that Waro was pressing very severely. It was the misfortune of

one of t'he Hikurangi players to put through his own goal again, making Waro two goals. However, Hikurangi attacked again, but were obviously tired. At this final stage of the game Darlington and Nimnio proved themselves great defenders and kept Waro at bay until the final whistle, sounded, with the score, Hikurangi 4, Waro 2.

This was the outstanding game of the season to Hikurangi. The feeling of splendid sportsmanship has never been so prominent before, and the large crowd of spectators went home highly satisfied with the excellent fare provided for them. Mr F. Mogford as referee and Mr W. A. Cole and Mr Heaney as linesmen carried out their duties mosc efficiently.
