When stumps were drawn at the close of the first day's play in the match between the South Africans and H Minor Counties the latter had compiled --- 196 as the first innings total. Essex, playing Hampshire, made 204 in the first innings, the latter respondjng with 205. - Gloucester drew with Kent. Free]i):in took five wickets for 69. * Yorkshire beat Leicester. \ Worcester drew with Northants. The Somerset-Surrey match was abandoned when Surrey had made 235 for eight wickets. The Wanvick-Lniicashirc match .was - - abandoned when the latter had mado 228 for four wickcts (Tyldestey 100), Derby (Jackson 103) drew with . Notts (Cavr 101 and G. Gunn 55).
