, NOTES. ! There was some interesting work at Kensington this week, done 011 the outside of the course proper. Lacej maker and Fairlands went three fiu- ! longs, finishing together. Snowflake, in W. R. Wilson's stable, was worked ; fast, but though showing considerable improvement of late, inay require very careful placing in order to win a race. Lady Lois, w'ho is looking very well, galloped half a mile—a really good ef-fort-—and Take Take did long slow work. « # # « Moerewa has joined W. R. Wilson's team, and will probably lie tried over hurdles- * * * » ilr W. Holster is having Gum Chips hacked about and intends to put her iyto work again shortly. * * *• * Mr H. Kiniber's well-known mares, Winning Lass and Miss Lucullus, look to be in good order, and if all goes well with them they will be among the visitors from Dargaville assisting at the Whangarei meeting. • ♦ * * A couple of two-year-olds at Dargaville that are well spoken of are by Depredation, and are the property of Mr Donald Finlayson. ♦.* * • A iilly that has recently been broken in at Dargaville is Mr J. P. Stan away's youngtser by Depredation from a Gold Reef mare. She shows plenty of quality. * * ♦ # Mr E. Kelly has Quaestor and Scofc- | tish Knight in work at Dargaville with 1 a view to the Whangarei meeting.
Dead Sweet, the Quin Abbey gelding once owned by Mr E. K. Plaisted, is now located at Dargaville, and, .vith Semper Idem, is trained by G. Weston. Dead Sweet is now nine years old. * * « * Mr Vincent May, the Ohaeawai gportsnian, has Elstow at his own place row, and the Bunyan gelding is looking ifl tip-top fettle- He should b§ Well Suited by tke twelve-iurlong hurdle races at the Whangarei meeting. * * # * Trotting enthusiasts ftt Dargaville are very keen just now. They say that membership fees are coming in so well that the recently formed Trotting Club skould be able to hold a race meeting at no distant date. Good luck to them! Clubs at Whangarei and Dargaville should work in well with each other, and the North certainly ought to be interested in the "utility horse.'' * » * * It was understood t'hat H. Gray was to have schooled Income before Lie Guianforte gelding left New Plymouth for Riccarton, but Gray was riding at the Gisborne meeting and could not get home in time. •* * * * Suggestion is said to have fully recovered from the effects of the accident which befel him at the Manawatu Racing Club's autumn meeting, and the Kilbroney gelding is to bo put into work again with a view to spring racing. # * • * Muraahi is again in work, with R. Brough's team at Hawera. Rational is another that lis recently been takeh in hand in Taranaki. » # * * Maunga appears to be rather an unfortunate horse. He went amiss before the Auckland winter meeting and at Riecarton last week lie hied badly in a gallop. From all accounts, however, it is considered that the latest trouble is not likely to prejudice his Grand National chances very serious- * # * » According to a Dunedin writer, MiJohn Richardson still intends to give Roseday a trip to Australia. The idea, is to have the chestnut racing there about Ohristmastide, and let the big cups go. Roseday is in easy work, ami perfectly well.
Locliella is> jumping the steeplechase country at Riccarton in great style, and is coming into favour for the Grand National Steeplechase, which he won in 1919. * # # * Tactful, who is reported from SydI ney to be definitely out of the game as the result of a snapped ligament, won £2900 in two seasons for Mr .T. D. Jones, who bought him at the close of 'his two-year-old career. # * * * The New Zealand-bred mare Lovesign is again in work in Sydney. So far there has been no news of her racing in Australia., and she has done nothing towards recouping the 2000 i guineas she was understood to have been sold for a few months ago. « * * # I I Duo, the top weight for the Winter j Cup, was foaled in 1917, so he is a seven-year-old. He was the best three-year-old of his season, winning the Derby and Canterbury Cup, also in the autumn the St. Leger, in each of which races he was followed home j by Gasbag, while Sasanof was the best lof - the lot he beat in the Trentham Gold Cup. After that lie' did no racing for three years, making his reappearance a few weeks ago. His form so far has been moderate. He slipped a muscle while galloping at Hastings last week, but it is stated that this will not prevent him racing at Riccar- . ton. | When Scion was purchased early in June by Mr ,T. Biggins, of Timaru, it Was understood that he would bo trained for his new owner in South Canterbury. Mr Biggins 'has changed his plans, however, and the Boniform gelding has gone into E. Scoullar's stable at Riccarton, to be prepared for next season's engagements, with the New Zealand Cup as his special mission. Scion is a proved stayer, and if he co'mes back to his best form he should do well this season.
H. Gray is given credit for riding a fine race on Hyrax, when he won the Hack Hurdles at Gisborne. It- is a coincidence that Gray's first winning ride after his return to tlio Dominion was on a jumper, .Carawock, and Ms last winning ride for the season was on another, Hyrax.
