THE DOMINION'S TRADE.

Details of the trade of New Zealand, published in the "Abstract ot Statistics,'' showed that during the six months ended on June 30 steady progress was made, and the balance of exports over imports was well in tavour of the Dominion. The total trade for the period was just under ■">('> millions sterling, imports representing a little over 22-h millions, while exports accounted for well over millions. The actual excess of exports over imports was £10,648,963, which is a substantial asset to the Dominion. An outstanding feature of the returns is that relating to the importation ot motor vehicles, which fire evidently

coming into the Dominion at an ever

increasing rate. If the rate is maintained, the Government Statistician remarks, the total importation ot motor vehicles in 1924 will easily eclipse the

record that was established in 1020, when the post-war "boom" was in full

operation. The trade of the nexi. six months of the year is hardly likely to reach the total of the first six months, are fit their lowest during July, August and September, though imports may show an increase as the Christmas season approaches. The position will, no doubt, be regarded as satisfactory, and it is possible that this year may see the Dominion's trade Teach the £100,000,000 mark. The larger her trade the more important will New Zealand be regarded in the eyes of the world, and the brighter will be her prospects of rapid progress and development. The Dominion's credit now stands high in London, trade is increasing, and there is every reason why the people of the country should face the future with confidence. New Zealand is sound and promises good returns to those who work hard.
