NORTHERN ADVOCATE DAILY Registered for transmission through the post as a newspaper. TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 1924. STOCK AND VALUES.
At the meeting of the Whangarei Jersey Cattle Club last week a lengthy debate took place on the question of the prices realised for pedigree stock in North Auckland. Sales of really high-class cattle in the North have been less satisfactory to the vendors than similar sales, in Taranaki, for instance, have been and various reasons for the difference have been suggested, one that was mentioned at last week's meeting being lack of organisation among breeders in the North. One speaker urged very strongly that more use should be made of the show ring as a means of informing people of the quality'of the stock available in the North. Others declared —and it would be easy to pile up evidence in support of their claim —that the stock in the North is quite as good as that in tho South and ought to realise as much money. Apparently the one point upon which all are agreed is that breeders should go in for more organisation and make themselves and their herds better known than, they are now. This should not be a difficult matter, provided breeders are willing to go to a little trouble. The best opportunity that they have of making their stock known is furnished, as was suggested at the meeting, by the show ring. The Whangarei Argicultural and Pastoral Society's Spring Show is an institution that is growing in magnitude and popularity, and with the increased traffic facilities that are offer-
ing every year the show must continue to improve. As the railway service, for instance, is developed exhibits will come from farther afield than they have done in the past, and thus local breeders of stock will enjoy greater opportunities than before of displaying the merits of their best animals in competition with those of noted exhibitors from a distance. The results of the use of the show ring should be all in favour of the breeders. The
prizes won may not, of course, recompense them for the time and trouble taken in preparing their stock for show, but the return will come when they seek a market for their stock. Once farmers get into their minds that the North has just as good cattle as other noted dairying districts have they will realise the wisdom of paying good prices at local sales in order to secure good blood and quality. That the North is able to satisfy their requirements we do not doubt for a moment. Organised effort to demonstrate to the people of the North the resources that their district possesses in the way of fine stock is all that is needed. Within three months from now the breeders of the district will have their opportunity to submit their stock to inspection at the Whangarei Spring Show. Fortunately the winter has been mild, and stock should be in | favourable condition to receive the extra preparation that is desirable if
they are to 'u-.k their best in the show pen.! and rings. It is not too early for exhibitors to be getting ready for the Spring Show nut only those who have good cattlo but others who are able to compete in other departments. If all who tire possible exhibitors will keep the show in mind from now on, they will be able to look forward to an exhibition that will set a new standard for the district.
