HOEA HORA DISTRICT.

MONTHLY

MEETING

At the homo of Mr G. Bcthell, Kauikn Road, on Friday night, the usual monthly meeting of the Horn Hora District School Committee was held, those present being Messrs A. Price, chairman, F. Mogford, secretary, G. Bethell, D. H. Redwood, G. Sargent, A. C. Bevington, Richards, and F. Higginson, acting headmaster. Messrs Bradley and W. J. Carr, the latter elected vice Mr Peat, transferred to Invercargill, apologised for inability to be present. ELECTRIC LIGHT. Mr W. S. Putwain, architect to the Education Board, under date July 11, wrote as follows:—"With reference to your inquiry re the installation ot electric light in the new school building I have arranged with the contractor to submit to me estimates for the provision of lighting in one of the classrooms, corridor and teachers' room, also for the provision of power points in each classroom and teachers' room. 1 hope to be in a position to deal with this matter in the course of a few days, but in any case you may rest assured that the work will be put in hand in due course.'' It was resolved to thank t'he architect for his guarantee of carrying out the work and to request installation of lights, hot points, heaters, etc., at the earliest moment. NEW APPOINTEE. The Board's assistant secretary, Mr R. P. J. Ray, wrote that the Board had authorised the appointment of Mr George Barber as headmaster of the school from September 1. . OLD SCHOOL REMOVAL. In reply to notification from the committee the Board secretary stated inter alia that the question of proceeding with the removal of the old classrooms to the now site would be brought under the Tiotice of an officer of the Department at an early date. It was resolved to thank the Board for its undertaking and to urge oxpodition in the matter. LANTERN LKCTUIIE PROCEEDS. The allocation of the sum of £3 Is realised as ttic school share of> a recent lantern lecture was 'held in abeyance pending inquiry as to the position of the Dental Surgery Fund. SCHOOL CLEANER. It was resolved that Mr S. Winnan 1 be appointed school cleaner vice Mr Burkharclt, that a schedule of duties j be obtained, the signing of the ag\ce j ment to be left, in the hands of the chairman and secretary and th; t the retiring cleaner be thanked for his ' services. The committee also decided to approach fhe Board for an extra grant for school cleaning purposes, as two buildings would require attention when the infant department was opened in the near future. j HEADMASTER'S REPORT. ] For the month ended July 31 the acting headmaster, Mr F. Higginson, ' reported that the n>ll number was 294 j and the average attendance 271.5, cf>2.3 per cent., these numbers indicating that the general health of the scholars was good, the same remark applying to the staff, whos- attendantand punctuality were quite satisfaetoiy. In regard to the new building the following matters required attention;--Provision of more blackboard apne° r>n the walls. Application should be renewed for supply of up-to-date furniture for the infant room, inclusive of tables and chairs instead of desks, or new desks. Space for a vegetable garden should be fenced off in the new playground; 25 squared totara posts could be spared for the purpose from the old playground. It was understood that the Director of Manual Training would be willing to assist in the garden scheme by way of a grant. An asphalted area should be provided ! round the new building as a drilling ground. The necessity for planting ' shelter trees along- the western boundary was stressed. j The Stationery Fund showed a | credit balance of approximately £5. j In reference to the last named sub- j ject the chairman was deputed to make \ investigation and report, as there seem- i ed to be stili some misunderstanding concerning the provisions of the fund. It was decided to purchase 50 Cypressiifi Lawsoniana trees, two year?; old, for shelter purposes, subject to the | Borough Council making fencing ar- j ranger.outs for protection of the trees against the depredations of animals

grazing on the Hora Ilora Park area. The committee resolved to ask tHe Board to provide an asphalted surface for a radius of -at least 20 feet around the nev.- building, as a necessary facility for drilling and general physical exercises, also that an asphalted path be laid down to the new build<ing from the front entrance to the playground. A sub-committee was set up to invostigate the requirement of blackboard surface. ADDENDA. Official advice was received that the next school holiday period wmiH commence on August 23, the school reopening taking place on September S. Tho secretary was desired to forward the committee's congratulations to Mr 11. Hoe on his election to the Education Board. Arrangements in connection with tho official opening of the new buiMl.ig were deputed to the care of the Finance Committee. A vote of thanks was accorded M"r Bethell for the use of his drawingroom for meeting purpose.
