Pcllino; Pit the Stjrt.? elections yesterday was apatheti-i There are-four parties in the field, namely, Conservative Nationalist or Government Pfcrty, Liberal (consisting of the breakaway wiiig of the Government supporters and the new anti-Consemitivo candidates), Labour and the Country' PVrtv. Returns were not available till midnight, as the voting is .'(in the' preferential system and the • counting did not eTose till midnight. This morning many retorni; are still inermplete. On the present figures Labour has gaineti four seat*, with the possibility of gaining seven. The six Independents elected include five Breakaway Liberals, s<* that the Government has apparently lost eleven seats, though there is possibility of the position altering somew'pi.t. The Country Party looks like losing one seat to Labour. All Ministers and other party ltead'ers seem safe. The Premier, Sir Alex. Peacock, declined to comment on the situation, but in face of the fact'that as things stand the Government can count on only a score' of direct 'supporters, compared wit 1 ! thirty in the last Parliament, it is considered that it will probably resign. •—A. and N.Z.
