HOCKEY.

The Whangarei Hockey Association's annual seven-a-side tournament was held on Tuesday, June a fair number of spectators witnessing the names, wliieh were in all cases keenly fought. The ladies' section was coinposed of teams from the following clubs —Mangapai (A and B teams), High School .Present Girls and Rainhler.s (A and 11). In the men's section there were eight teams —Mata (A and B), Defence, Huia. Mangapai (A and B), Maungakaramea and Y.M.C.A. The competition was of n knock-out nature and only on one occasion—Defence v Mata B —had extra time to be played. The standard of phv both in the ladies' and men 's games was of higher calibre than witnessed fur some f ime pa:-t. and gave a good prospect of strong representative teams. Following :ire '.he results of the games:— HEX'S .MATCHES. Mangapai B v lluia—For the first live minutes Huia had much the better of the game. Ma ngapai B plaving a more steady game than their opponents and for the remainder of the game held most of the advantage, eventually winning by 2 goals to nil.
Mangapai A v 7.M.C.A.—'From the initial bully the game was fast and both sides played good hockey. Mangapai's vanguard a hard fighting lot and their combined play no doubt won them the game. Y.M.C.A. were unlucky a number of times, the pace telling its tale on their back division, who had most of the work. At call of time the score stood—Mangapai A 2, Y.M.C.A. nil.
Maungakaramea v Mata A —This was, perhaps, one of the be.st games of the day, the teams being evenly matched. Maungakaramea led off with attack, being quickly put on the defensive. Xcijther side gained much ' advantage in the ensuing play, the ball travelling quickly up and down field, both teams making the price strenuous, but both backs were sure and hard hitters. Opportunities were missed by both sides through over-anxietv, Mata winning by a penalty corner. Mata B v Defence—This game was keenly fought, Defence having slightly the advantage, being unlucky on a number of occasions in not netting, Mata B's defence kept them from scoring till time was called. Extra iim<j was played, Defence pressing their opponents to their circle, where they registered a goal, thus ending the game, Defence being declared winner^. Second Round. Mangapai A v Defence—The former Ave re on the attack from the blow of the whistle, Defence's back, who ivas playing a sound game, transferring the play, the ball travelling up and down for a while.. Event.iallv Mangapai A were awarded a penalty corner. This Defence cleared and transferring to Mftngapai territory were keen to net, which they did r.oon after. soon evened, and with the penalty corner already gained were leading - in points. Defence's forwards worked hard to gain the winning goal which they eventually did. thus making them winners by two goals to one
| Mat.i A v Mangnpai B—Mata's more experienced players wore inclined to take their opponents a bit -heitply and had to considerably liven up soon after the commencement. Mangapai's back division put in some good work but their forwards lacked the ability to continue it. A lot of give-and-take play was witness-d Mata A, settling down to hard work rind plaving a good Same, pressed their opponents till they gained the verdici: by one goal to nil. Final. Defence v IMata A—The latter played a much bettor game than that against Mangapai B, Defence also giving- a better exhibition than in tneir previous matches. For some time there Avas no score, but Defence at length opened I U P by finding" the net. The pace for a j while was fast and Defence ':; back bore ' the brunt of inosr. of the work. .Mata kept at it and were successful in registering- two goals quickly. After some interchanging play time was called, leaving Mata the winners of the men's division. LADIES' SUCTION". Bam biers v -Mangapai—The first game in the ladies' section was thatabove mentioned and was fast and even from start to linisli. liamblers gave a line display in every departI ment, Hie back division playing with assurance and giving their vangnarl plenty of work. .Mungi'.pai A. nevertheless, kept the other side busy and made themselves dangerous on several occasions. There w.s not a great deal of difference between the two teams and it was the lie-t game of the ladies' competition, liamlilers wo?i bv one goal to nil. .Mangapr.i B v School — These teams also were evenly matched and neither side held mud' of the ar:lvantage during the game, the plav being mostly of a give-and-take jiature. hardly without incident.
