CITY NOTES.

BIRTHDAY HONOURS.

(Special to "N>rthern Advocr-.te.") AUCKLAND, This Day. The great excitement of the week so far has been the elevation of the Mayor (Mr .T. H. Gunson) to knighthood. It is just as well to say, straightout, that only a few grudge Mr Gunson the honour which has been conferred upon him. There are those who will wish to analyse his services and ask how he becanic entitled to the mark of distinction which His Majesty has conferred, but it 'is only fair and reasonable to recognise that Mr Gunson has given a Lngthy period of service to the principal city of the Dominion. He was not only Mayor when he welcomed the Prince of Wales to Auckland, but he has hold office during a period of unique historic interest. He has not only had fhe honour of entertaining the Prince, but «ilso the Admiral of the Special Service Squadron, together with Lori .Tel acce, the supreme head of the British Navy. Opinions now widely differ in regard to the bestowal of titlei, but it seems just about a fair conclusion that Auckland shares in the favour bestowed upon its chief citizen. Mrs Gunson, let it be re : corded, has also dene a lot of hard work in the city. THE KING'S BIRTHDAY. The Queen City put on her "best bib and tucker" for the King's Birthday.
