HOLIDAY SPIRIT.
AUCKLAND ENJOYMENT. TRIBUTE TO TEAM SERVICE. (Special to "Northern Advocate. ,, ) AUCKLAND, This Day. Splendid weather prevailed for the holiday yesterday. There were sports and a military parade in the morning, but the chief attraction was the races at Ellerslie, where a record attendance of 25,000 people assembled. The tramways handled a large part of this traffic, a frequent service being run from 9.30 a.m. Some 7000 people availed themselves of special cars, while another 3000 travelled to Ellerslie by special trains. Of these 2000 were from Auckland and the remainder from the country. Motor cars, buses and converted lorries also plied a very brisk trade. The tramways gave the best exposition yet of their ability to handle large numbers smoothly. After the races a seemingly never-end-ing line of cars was able to move 6000 passengers from the course within 45 minutes. The fact that the accommodation was ample and the cars were despatched to various destinations gave the trams a decided advantage over the railways which the public were quick to recognise and seize. There was no serious hitch of any kind. The only delay occurred in Queen Street about 5.30. p.m.,.when the large number of cars converging on the city caused a temporary congestion.
