DEAF AND DUMB.

AN UNKNOWN SOLDIER. ROME, February 25. The mystery of the deaf and dumb soldier who is suffering from loss of memory is deepening. Already he has been claimed as a lost son by mothers in many lands. When it was thought his identity had been established he was handed over to a family named Ferrard, but the soldier showed such antipathy that he was returned to the hospital. • Inquiries reveal that the soldier married Emilinda Stampone, with whom he lived for several months, but the Ferraros discovered that as their son lie married Maria Romain. The first wedding, therefore, was annulled and the second confirmed. Twenty women of the United States, Brazil, England, Greece, Yugoslavia, Austria and Italy are now claiming him as their husbands. The authorities' latest theory is that he is shamming.—A. and N.Z. * !
