BASIS OF CALCULATION. THE CONSERVATIVE AMENDMENT. (Received 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, February 26. The Conservative amendment to the Liberal motion on the subject of Poplar relief, which will be debated in the House of Commons to-morrow, calls on the House to declare that the amount of poor law relief should be calculated on a lower scale than the earnings of an independent workman who is maintaining himself by his labour.—Reuter. GOVERNMENT SAFE. LIBERALS WILL WITHDRAW. (Received 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, February 26. In the debate to-morrow the Liberals' amendment in reference to Poplar will not result in the Government's defeat. The Liberals will withdraw their amendment. The Conservatives will probably object, but the Government will have Liberal support.—Sua.
