WAR MEMORIAL.
I)ARGAVILLE SUGGESTIONS,
INCLUDE MANG A WIIA RE PARK
DARGAVILLE, This Day
A representative meeting of delegates from all the local and sports bodies, friendly societies and other institutions, met to discuss the question of a suitable memorial to fallen soldiers. A number of schemes were placed before the meeting, including suggestions for beautifying the foreshore, the erection of a Plunket nurses'
room, a. mothers' rest room, and a band rotunda. It was pointed out by Messrs Colmore-Williams, A. E. Harding and W. J. Robertson that in 1919 an area of SO acres of land at Manga - whare had been purchased, by the direction of a public meeting, as a memorial park. This had been paid for, and was hold in trust by the Borough- Council, but beyond fencing, not much had been done to the grounds. The funds for this were made available principally by moneys promised for the Red Cross funds and not used. It also was stated that there was a sum of approximately £3500 of Red Cross money still in hand, a portion of which they were hoping to use for the completion of the grounds. The speakers asserted that it would be a distinct breach of faith to now go back 011 the arrangement made in 1919. They said that the committee appointed had done its duty as directed, and while favouring the foreshore schemes, they considered that the original scheme should also be proceeded with. After a long debate it was decided that :i committee from the meeting should meet the old committee to sec if some amicable arrangement could be reached, and to report to a further meeting on January 10.
