TOO COSTLY.
INTERNATIONAL TENNIS. ANDERSON WILL RETIRE. (Received 12.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. It is understood that Anderson's retirement from big lawn tennis is due to the expense attached to international tours, but it is not expected ! that he will entirely withdraw from ' local competitions. It is stated that the champion, owing to losses sustained in his sports supplies business during his absence in America, approached the Tennis Council for £500 as compensation, contending that the authorities made big profits from his participation in international tournaments. The Council flatly refused on the ground that the amateur rules governing tennis tournaments left it no option, but promised to defray legitimate expenses guaranteed by the manager.—A. and N.Z.
