WHANGAREI HARBOUR CLAIMS
A 1 NEGATIVE RESPONSE,
"(Special to "Northern Advocate?') WELLINGTON, This Day. Mr Fred Murdoch (Marsdeji) asked, the' Minister of Defence (Sir R. H. Rhodes) whether, in view of the geographical position of Whangarei Harbour, its natural advantages in depth of water, safe anchorage and general excellence, he would favourably consider establishing a naval base in that harbour. Mr Murdoch added that -.he Minister of Defence, in replying to 1 the Member for Wairau; (Mr W. J'. Girling) stated that danger might be l expected from the North and .• that: a naval base, would bo .required on the' east coast of the Northern Peninsula.
Sir R. H. Rhodes replied: "I am advised that Whangarei Harbour is uot suitablo for naval 'purposes."
Mr Murdoch said that if the answer had to be taken, as final''the only conclusion was that there was no suitable liarbour for a naval base, in New Zealand. He claimed that Whangarei vas suitable, and he would ask the Minister to give the matter further consideration.'
