TRADE IN OPIUM.
STEAMER COOK FINED. BRISBANE, This Day. Tehau Lyen, a cook on the steamer Aren De Kerkmas, from Hamburg, via China ports, was fined £30 for being in possession of opium. He was described by he police as an international distributor of opium, and a heavy penalty was asked for, as 'a big trade was being carried on. It was stated that at night a number of Chinese were noticed passing and repassing a vacant allotment near the wharf where the steamer was moored. While the police were watching a motor car contaning a well-dressed Chinese drew up near the allotment without lights. When it commenced to move away two police officers commanded the driver to 3top. The driver, however, flew past them. It was afterwards learned that the car contained 80 tins of opium A little later the accused came along: and was accosted by the police, who found four tins of opium in his shirt.
