HOCKEY.

SATURDAY'S MATCHES,

The hockey competitions were advanced a further stage 011 Saturday afternoon, games being played at Mangapai, Maungttkaramea, Hi fh School ground and Weaver's paddock. In every ease the grounds were heavy and consequently the hockey indulged in \uis not of a fast nature.

LADIES' MATCHES.

Onerahi met Kia Toa's Saturday team on the High School ground, Onerahi being defeated by 9 goals to nil. In justice to Onerahi it might be mentioned that they were considerably handicapped in having a number of new and inexperienced players, whereas in Kia Toa's eleven there were a number of players wiho at one time or another had played l'epresentative games. Messrs H. Thomas and H. Hannam controlled the game.

MEN'S MATCHES.

DEfFENCE v. Y.M.C.A. Defence met Y.M.C.A. on Weaver's paddock at 2 p.m. and the latter were easily defeated by 5 goals to nil. Defence had the hotter of the game right through and it was only occasionally that the game was in their territory. Y.M.C.A. personnel was composed of two three experienced players, the rest comprising this year's, who were keen, but laeking knowledge of the game. For Defence Cotterd.il, Conncll, Shephard, Massey and Hannam netted. Mr N. 6. Munro controlled the game.

MAUNGAKARAMEA v. ONERAHI,

This game was also played at Weaver's paddock, resulting in a win for Maungakaramea by 3 goals to one. Maungakarama, who have improved considerably, opened up the initial stages of the game by attacking Onerahi 's territory, and in a short time after commencement had registered a goal. They again pressed their op-, ponents and Oiierahi, after a bit of give-and-take play attacked, but were warded off, Maungakaramea securing and netting their second goal. Onerahi livened up and on one or two occasions threatened their opponents' goal, who successfully defended. Maugnakaramea forwards, on securing the ball from their backs, took upfield to the cdrcle, where they were successful in finding the net. From then on till call of half-time the game wias evenly contested. In the second half Onerahi settled down considerably and with more combined play than exhibited in the first half gave Maungakaramea some anxious moments, Maungakaramea. "however, warded them off and the ball was kept moving up and . the field, neither side having much advantage. Eventually. Onerahi got on*? in, the game ending as above stated. O'Carroll, Hill and O'Shea scored for Maungakaramea and Munro for Onerahi. Mr F. Durncy controlled the game.
