DECIMAL COINAGE.
BASED ON THE PENNY. SYDNEY, This .Day. f An address on "Decimal Coinage" "was delivered by Mr G. : E.. C. Sobey, at the Victorian section of the Empire Decimal Association, at the Millions Club. Mr Sobey said that the objective of the via media currency system was to bring about the decimalisation of sterling coinage/ at the same time producing a system which would dove-
tail into the currencies of the dollar , and the franc. It was considered that some of the advantages were that ! via media currency saved time in education, reduced liability of errors in , bookkeeping; provided greater ease im : computing amounts expressed as percentages, and in converting- British money to foreign, and meant the obtaining of greater accuracy from botfii ■ the good and the average man. The pennypiece would be the basis of thesuggested system, and other denominations would be lOd to 10<M pieces, the latter to be known as the lion. A * half L lion note (50 pence) would coyrespond with the American dollar. The first thing to be done would' be to issue ■ tenpenny pieces, and then the notes of ■ pence would gradually r&place ten shilling notes. There would be no interferenep with the circulation' of £5 and larger notes. In time the use of ' convenience coins such as the the sixpence, and the threepence would be discontinued. 1 •
