More than 67 per cent, of the ©oal used in manufacturing industries is I consumed in the North Island. This is •accounted for largely by the extensive use in the two main centres of the South Island of hydro-electric power. The most remarkable differences appear in tramways, electric supply, and gasworks. Tramways use in the North Island 67,858 tons, as against 2534 tons used in the South Island; electric sup--j'lv 79,174 in the North as against 14,OG6 in the South, and gas supply 170,506 tons in the North Island as against 76,965 in the South Island.
