The "Groat McEwen" and his parry arrived in Whangarei to-day and i-.ri staying at the Settlers' Hotel.
Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M., who lias reached the retiring age, was accorded a flattering farewell in Christcliurcli this morning by members of the legal profession and pressmen.
At yesterday's rifle meeting on the Otaika Eange the president (Mi* D. Patterson) referred in feeling terms to thr- loss the sport had recently sustained owing to the death of the late Mr Jis. McMillan of the Mata Club. The sp-3'ik-er expressed sympathy with the club in it." loss and referred to the deceased as a noble sport, an enthusiastic rifleman and a loving husband and father. Or. the motion of Mr Patterson a vote of condolence was passed to the relatives, the audience standing in silence with bared heads.
