The artless way in which the writer of a. letter to the Hawera Borough Council introduced his subject cause 1 no little amusement. The opening sentence read: "With regard to my joking the sewer." One councillor remarked that he had heard of men joining a lot of things, but he had never heard of one joining a sewer before.
