PROPOSED HIGH SCHOOL.
FOR HOKIANGA DISTRICT.
MINISTER FAVOURABLE
(Special ito "Northern Advocate.") \ WELLINGTON, This Day.
The Minister of Education was asked yesterday by Mr V. H. Rood (Bay of Islands) whether he would proceed witih his original intention of establishing a district high school at Rawene for thi; benefit of the Hokkinga disitrict. It had beon promised that a school would be opened at Rawene iu February, said Mr Reed, but the depaitment was said to be afraid that the attenda.nce would be insufficient. The proposed school at Rawene would be a great convenience for a la.rge and populous district,
The Minister said tha/t the officials of the department lhad gone into the matter and were now satisfied with the figures. At present ho had .to be very careful of expenditure and no new schools were being established if it could be avoided. He recognised ithe peculiar conditions at Hokianga, however, and knew that there was aio # opportunity of obtaining secondary education north of "Whangarei. In these circumstances, with guarantee figures, ht was inclined to stretch a point in this case.
