BEFORE MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Two offenders came before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., at the Whangarei Magistrate's Court this morning, charged with imbibing alcoholic liquor to excess. Robert Ellison wa* reputed to have been helplessly dnunk and wandering aimlessly at Portland on the 12t'h inst. Senr.-Sgt. Hollis stated that accused was generally of decent character, and appeared to be a sufferer from mental .strain, upon which intoxicating liquor had a deleterious influence. Ellison was convicted and discharged on condition of payment of £1 16s for board due to the police department and car hire. On the Sen.-Sergeant's application the accused wa*-» allowed reasonable time in which to make payment. Richard Hamilton pleaded guilty to being drank in Whangarei last night. Son.-Sgt Hollis said that accused was a runaway sailor and 'had been convicted on several charges rocentlv. Though the police had found work for him twice he had not stuck to it, but had boon drunk on two or three occasion--. Accused was convicted and fined 'JOs, in default seven days' imprisonment, tlie Magistrate remarking that Whangarei did not wish to see any more of him.
