MAGISTRATE'S COURT

At the Whangarei Magistrate's "Jour!, yesterday Harry Jeffries was charged with assaulting Henry Howard Flliott, by striking him on April 7 with hi.-; fisr. The story of the proceedings was tliat Elliott had dumped defendant 's siva" out on a verandah where it had been wot by the rain, and that Jeffries and a young man had interviewed him in connection with his action and the alleged assault had been the lesult. The Magistrate, after hearing the evidence, said ho considered that it was insufficient, on which to convict and he dismissed the charge without, allowing costs on either side. RESCUE OF IMPOUNDED HORSES. At Waikiekie, Thomas Fitzgerald rescued from Joseph Babe four horses seized by the latter for the purpose of impounding thorn, and after hearing the case the Magistrate convicted him of < the offence and ordered him to pay £5 | 5s eosts. I MILITATiY BEFAULTERS. The Defence Department secured convictions with 7s eosts in each case, against the following Territorials for failing to attend drills:—U. Dent • and L. Dwvor, costs only; O. B. Mann, lined 10s; -J. l-i. £oronton and L. Sowry, fined £1 each. * R. Di-nt was charged with obstructing a parade of A. Coy. } l~>th N.A. Regiment 011 the 22nd 111 st., and v. ith failing to obey a lawful command i f a senior oilicor, and he was fined £ 1 nri £1 eevrs.
