CARPENTERS' PROTEST.
INTEREST!NG DEVELOPMENT. UNION AS CONTRACTOR. WELLINGTON, This Day. The secretary of the Carpenters' Union says that about 70 men have left their jobs since Friday as the result of the employers' decision to limit the wages to 2s 9d an hour. He say* it is not the union that is applying coercion, and some of the members have accepted ihe reduced wages, but thesearc comparatively few. t An interesting development is tho> i decision of the union to engage under the guild system in the business of building or altering houses, believing it can compote successfully with the present contractors. —Press Assn.
